So, this is a question that comes up a lot because these are flash-fried and then freeze-dried noodles traditionally held in styrofoam. The answer to this question is both YES and NO.
This may seem confusing at first, but we’ll break down which Nissin cup noodles are safe to microwave and which aren’t, as well as why they can or can’t be microwaved.
Nissin Cup Noodles in Styrofoam Cups
These are the kinds that you shouldn’t microwave. Traditionally, you boil water in a pot, add the ramen noodles from a styrofoam cup to the water, cook the noodles in the water, and then add them back to the cup.
The reason it is a bad idea to add water to the cup and microwave them is that styrofoam is considered toxic, and when heated in a microwave, some of the toxins in the microwave can come out and seep into your food.
The most common element in styrofoam you’ve probably heard about is called PFA’s or polyfluoroalkyl substances, which are harmful to your health.
You can still microwave these noodles, just not in the container they come in. Simply put them in a microwave-safe container with water and microwave for 2 ½ to 3 minutes as usual.
Nissin Cup Noodles in Paper Cups
These are a relatively new invention by Nissin, and these are actually meant to be microwaved from the beginning. Simply peel off the lid, fill with water and cook for the recommended amount of time.
Remember to handle it with care as all contents coming out of the microwave will be extremely hot.
Combine your Cup Noodles with some kimchi or a side of broccoli for a tasty treat.
