Bunch of whole onions on wooden cutting board on table with knife

We all have that one odd thing on our counter or in our fridge that we’ve probably wondered, “Can I just microwave that?” Well, for onions, the answer is indeed YES!

There are several recipes and ways to microwave onions that will result in tasty dishes with little effort.

Can You Fry Onions In The Microwave?

One of the simplest recipes you can make in the microwave is for delicious fried onions. First, let’s get together everything you’ll need:

  • Microwave-safe plate (or bowl for large batches)
  • Several medium to large onions
  • Oil or butter

Once you’ve got your ingredients together, it’s time to start the simple prep process. Simply slice the onions as you would if you were to pan-fry them.

Then place them onto your plate or bowl with just a bit of oil or butter, maybe just 2-3 tablespoons. The fat helps the onions to crisp up.

Cook on high for 2-3 minutes, depending on your microwave. The key is to mix and stir the onions halfway through the cooking process, between 1-1 ½ minutes. Once done, they’re ready to serve.

Can You Sautee Onions In The Microwave?

Two halfs of onion on wooden cutting board with vegetable and spicies.

You’ll need the same ingredients as the above option, plus a few pinches of table salt for this recipe.

To begin, peel and slice the onion lengthwise, then chop them again to the desired size. The chopping will help release the flavor.

Gently cover the sliced onions with salt. The salt will help soften the onions and bring out more of the flavor.

You can then add oil or liquid butter to a bowl with the onions. This will help them steam.

Cover the bowl tightly with a plate or microwave-safe wrap and cook for 5-7 minutes. Once done, toss the onion slices in a bowl and serve.

Final Thoughts

There you have it. Two quick and simple ways to microwave onions and have great tasting dishes.

Be sure to play around with your microwave to get the cooking time down, and you’ll be making great tasting microwaved onions in no time.
