Drat. It’s been a couple of days, and your donuts are now a bit hard. Can you microwave them to make them taste better?

The answer is YES! Not only can you microwave them... but we actually recommend that you microwave them whenever possible!

A stale donut is good but stale. A microwaved donut regains its soft, warm, and airy texture.

Every bite tastes heavenly. In many cases, a three-day-old donut that has been microwaved properly tastes nearly as good as a fresh one does.

And we’re not the only ones making this recommendation, by the way. Krispy Kreme, one of the leading donut brands, puts microwave instructions right on the side of their iconic green-and-white boxes!

How to Microwave Donuts:

Put your donut on a plate and set the timer. We recommend microwaving just one donut at a time, as donuts are one of the more “difficult” foods to microwave properly.

(But it’s so worth it!)

Bunch of different donuts with different icing.

Next, set the timer for five seconds. Five seconds doesn’t seem like a lot of time, but when dealing with modern microwaves, five seconds is often all you need.

Take the donut out and assess its heat level. If needed, put the donut back in for five more seconds.

But don’t go overboard with time! The difference between five seconds and fifteen seconds makes a big difference in the world of microwaving donuts. Too much time can ruin your donut.

Adjusting for Frosting and Fillings:

Frosting and fillings both reheat faster than the dough of the donut does.

In some cases, this leads to your donut dough being lukewarm, while the frosting and fillings are sufficiently hot.

You don’t have to settle for a lukewarm donut. Microwave your donut to get the dough hot and the fillings piping hot.

Then, wait a minute or two before eating. This approach guarantees a perfectly-warm donut throughout -- and not a burnt tongue!

See? That wasn’t so hard. Enjoy your donut!
