White bowl full of raw broccoli on wooden table

It’s a Monday night, you just got off work, and the last thing you want to do is clean up a messy kitchen and wash tons of dishes after cooking dinner.

You need something fast, simple, and easy—you start to wonder, can I cook broccoli in the microwave?

Thankfully, we’re here to tell you: YES, you can microwave broccoli!

You can microwave both raw and frozen broccoli in a matter of minutes with minimal effort. You can safely reheat leftover broccoli in the microwave, too.

Even better news? This method of cooking broccoli is much healthier than alternatives like sautéing or boiling. Fewer nutrients are lost in the process, which means your little greens are better for you when cooked this way.

It is the same for microwaved cauliflower or asparagus.

How to Microwave Raw Broccoli

First, place your washed and dried broccoli florets in a microwave-safe dish.

Next, add 2 tablespoons of water to the bottom of the dish per pound of broccoli (pro-tip: a typical head of broccoli is around 1 pound).

Next, cover the dish with a microwave cover, a damp paper towel, or a microwave-safe plate. This enclosure will allow the evaporated water in the dish to steam the broccoli.

Microwave your broccoli for 2-3 minutes in 30-second intervals, checking in between each interval to ensure thorough heating.

Your broccoli is ready to be served when it’s tender and warmed to your desire. Be careful when removing broccoli from the microwave—the steam will be hot!

How to Microwave Frozen Broccoli

Follow the same steps above but increase your time in the microwave to 5 minutes in 30-second intervals. If your broccoli is already prepared in a microwave-safe bag, follow the heating instructions listed on the bag.

How to Microwave Leftover Broccoli

Since your broccoli has already been cooked, simply place your leftovers in a microwave-safe dish, cover using one of the options listed above, and cook for 1-2 minutes in 30-second intervals.

Check the broccoli in between each interval to ensure thorough heating and remove once cooked to your liking.

Final Words

Want to spice up your side dish? Consider adding garlic, butter, or salt to your broccoli before popping it in the microwave.

Broccoli isn’t the only veggie that can be cooked in the microwave. Save yourself some cooking time by checking out other side dishes that can be made in the microwave here.
