If you’ve ever stopped by one of your favorite coffee places and then gotten busy with other work, then you’ve probably wondered if it’s safe just to stick that Dunkin Donuts cup in the microwave for a few seconds to warm your coffee back up.

Unfortunately, this is one of those times when your favorite beverage is going to have to disappoint you. Dunkin Donuts cups, like Starbucks paper coffee cups, do not microwave safe.

Though they can hold very hot coffee easily, heating them up will not work out well.

Why You Can’t Microwave Dunkin Donuts Cups

So, if you’re wondering what’s so unsafe about microwaving a paper cup, there are a couple of reasons. First, the cup doesn’t insulate from heat well, so you can expect it to get VERY HOT if you microwave it.

Secondly, the cup is made of paper combined with glue. It can hold hot liquids just fine, but if you heat the actual cup, it can cause it to leak or collapse entirely, leaving you with nothing but a puddle of coffee in the microwave.

Even if the cup did hold up, you really don’t want to risk ingesting microwaved glue along with your coffee.

Many times your tasty Dunkin' will be served to you in a plastic cup which is also generally not safe to heat in the microwave. Plastic will often melt when heated, unless it is specifically designed to be in the microwave.

We always recommend transferring your joe to a container that is made to withstand the powerful forces of the microwave.

What to do Instead

Just because you can’t microwave the cup doesn’t mean you can’t use it to hold hot coffee.

If you can microwave the coffee in a separate dish or use the coffee pot, then your Dunkin Donuts cup can hold the heated-up beverage without a problem.

Dunkin Donuts cups make perfect travel cups, so it’s a shame to waste them just because they can’t go in the microwave. If you heat the coffee in another container, your cup is still great for transporting hot coffee!
