Holy Guacamole! Can you microwave that leftover guac (or burrito with guac) that’s sitting in your fridge?
The short answer is YES. Unlike something like milk, guacamole is perfectly safe to eat after it has been microwaved.
But you shouldn’t expect microwaved guacamole to taste exactly like fresh guacamole does. Because once you pop it into the microwave, things change.
To start, the guacamole will become softer. Some people love this new texture; others hate it.
And the guacamole will be hot! It’s usually served cold. Again, for some, the extra heat is a plus.
If warmer and slightly-softer guacamole is okay with you, proceed to learn how to microwave guacamole so that you take the most delightful bite after you hear the beep.
How to Microwave Guacamole
Begin by placing your guacamole on a microwave-safe plate. (Everyone knows that, but we figure we’d remind you. Just in case!)
From here, you want to be very careful with how long you microwave the guacamole. If too many seconds go by, the guacamole may explode all over the inside of your microwave (which may make you question whether or not the snack was even worth it). How long to microwave your guacamole depends on two things. How much guacamole do you have, and how powerful is your microwave?
In general, less is more. Start with 15 to 25 seconds. If you hear the beep and the guacamole still isn’t warm, just add more time.
If you’re microwaving a dish that has guacamole in it, like a burrito, or nachos your life is easy. Just use your normal time estimate (as if the dish has no guacamole in it). Within a prepared dish, the
chances of the guacamole “exploding” are close to zero.
Remember: Guacamole should be kept in an airtight container and stored inside of your refrigerator. Spoiled (brown) guacamole belongs in the trash, not the microwave.
Adios, and good luck on your guacamole adventure!
