The answer is NO. You should not attempt to microwave aluminum foil.
Technically, you can microwave aluminum foil in some cases, and we’ll go through the specifics below.
But for all intents and purposes, you should not consider microwaving aluminum foil.
What Happens When You Microwave Aluminum Foil?
Aluminum foil is made of metal. Metal and microwaves don’t mix.
Specifically, metal and microwaves don’t mix because of how microwave rays work.
Microwave rays pass through food… but they don’t pass through metal.
If your leftover food is wrapped in aluminum foil, placing it into the microwave means that your food won’t even heat up.
But the metal will “deflect” the microwave rays, which can lead to serious problems.
In particular, aluminum foil can lead to sparks inside of your microwave, which can lead to an electrical fire in your kitchen.
Best case scenario, your microwave will break. Worst case scenario, you’ll have to call the fire department.
Overall, it’s a losing proposition to put aluminum foil into the microwave. In fact, avoid placing anything metal in the microwave. Check out our other articles about parchment paper, wax paper, paper towels, and vacuum-sealed bags to learn about each material’s microwave durability.
It’s just too risky.
Technically, You Can Microwave Aluminum Foil.. But..
The FDA states that small amounts of aluminum foil may, in fact, be microwaved safely.
But why take the chance? Just remove the aluminum foil from whatever you’re microwaving before you start the timer.
If you miss a small piece or two, you’ll probably be fine, but it’s better not to take the risk.
If you must microwave aluminum foil, make sure to watch the microwave closely. If you smell anything strange or see a spark, stop the timer immediately.
Overall? Just don’t do it. Don’t microwave aluminum foil.
Your microwave, and your kitchen, will thank you.
